Every once in a long while a book comes along that stands out from the crowd due to its distinctive nature. "The Slave Catcher's Woman" is such a book. The reader is immediately transported back in time to the antebellum South where cotton, slaves...and slave catchers are the norm. The people and events depicted are very real as is the language. One gets swept up in the delightful colloquialisms and flow of speech. The story at first, repels. Modern man does not care to confront the realities of life when humans were escaping bondage,fleeing for their lives, being tracked down by men with shotguns, whips and bloodhounds. However, the hero of this novel, Coswell Tims, is no Simon Legree. He finds himself in the business of tracking but does not seek pleasure in another's pain. With raw racism abundant around him he provides the reader with a fresh outlook. The slave catcher comments on the institution of slavery, duplicity of mankind, love and life from an objective point of view. His homespun philosophy grows on the reader like (as Tims himself might say) "moss do on trees." The action scenes are real and compelling.The history of the time period is well researched. However, the book will most likely be remembered for what it says about race, humanity and the good that is within people. It is truly one of the more remarkable books ever penned.

I was drawn in from the introduction, which is important to read because it explains the history behind the book. I didn't want to put The Slave Catcher's Woman down. Initially I thought, why should I care about Coswell Tims' story? I was rooting against him, I was rooting for him. The story has suspense, twists and you learn a lot about what life was like back then, and the truly difficult life slaves endured. I passed it onto my cousin who also said she "couldn't put it down." I agree with what someone else wrote - it could be a movie.
I really loved this book. It was very well researched and the story was told from the main characters point of view. I really felt transported back to the era. What I found interesting was Coswell Tims view on his job as a slave catcher. He was not one who enjoyed it, feeling pleasure in the act. It was a job for him. He had enough interaction with Slaves and their Owners to reflect on both sides points of view. I'm not sure if many in the south really felt conflicted like that, historically we've all been lead to believe that the entire South felt that Blacks should be slaves and had no rights. It has made me curious. I loved the characters, especially Coswell whose actions are dictated by what he feels is right more than anything else.
I totally agree with all of the reviews posted here. I don't usually read historical novels, as my tastes are more along the lines of Tom Clancy, but I bought this book because I was intrigued by the topic and thought it might add a different perspective to my hazy recollections of American history. It accomplished this many times over, but what I was not expecting was a novel full of so many unforeseen twists, turns, and surprises, much like a Clancy novel. Littlefield's writing speaks of a good deal of research into his subject matter and it shows; I felt drawn into the period, as if I were living in it, while sharing the hopes and fears of Coswell Tims and the other richly-drawn characters. After having followed Mr. Tims through a particularly deadly and tumultuous time in his life, my only wish is that another novel will follow, perhaps portraying his life during the impending Civil War.
I bought this book because it was recommended and once I started to read it, I experienced enjoyable time reading story.
I couldn't put this book down! It was historically accurate and transported me to another era of American history.
Riveting story line, Believable people. The reader is drawn into the story immediately. The book would make a superb movie.
This book was highly recommended to read. The author writes about his research into a topic that he has much knowledge about.
