From inside a giant asteroid, hundreds of light years from Earth, Admiral Jenetta Carver is beginning to look forward to a trip home, and finally receiving command of her own ship. Her five-year tour of duty as the Base Commander of the Stewart SC Base is nearing an end, and the ship carrying her replacement has been underway for more than a year.

However, when the GSC destroyer carrying Admiral Vroman is attacked just a few light years from the base, her plans are quickly forgotten. Rescue ships arriving at the site the next day find only corpses aboard the Lisbon, while a severely damaged freighter with a dead Tsgardi crew floats nearby. There's no sign of the admiral, and most of the SC crew is missing.

The Milori Military Forces, unsuccessful in their first attempt to defeat the Galactic Alliance and annex its territory, are preparing for a second assault. Emperor Maxxiloth has decided he won't be embarrassed a second time and sends every ship available in his empire as part of the new invasion force.

Months later, a shuttle touches down on a primeval world far inside the Frontier Zone, where Admiral Vroman and the senior officers from the GSC destroyer Lisbon are to be marooned by their Milori captors. As the rest of the crew is being shuttled down to the surface, the officers quickly draw up a plan of survival. Left with only the most basic of supplies and equipment, the spaceship crew must learn how to exist in a hostile, planetary environment.

While the forces at Stewart are preparing for an imminent attack by the Milori, the crew of the Lisbon is learning that they have some rather large and particularly nasty neighbors with voracious appetites and predacious habits.

I gave this book 4 stars, because I'm really enjoying the series and this book did not disappoint. Each book is a well written complete plot so you're not left hanging, waiting a year for the next installment. However, since this series is about the life and exploits of the main character, Jenetta Carver, you should start with the first book. But if not, the author does a great job of integrating the back history to help a first-time reader understand the storyline. And since there were already about 10 books written when I found this author, I get to bing-out to my heart's content!
The writing quality and creativity has not diminished in this sixth book. I especially like the battle scenes. The strategies used by the main character are unique and unexpected. (Spoiler alert, stop here if you havn't started this series yet.)
There are a few things that could make this a 5 star series, such as the involvement of Jenetta's clones and her cats. They're written in as supporting characters, but their existence doesn't add anything to the storylines in books subsequent to their introduction into the series. But as part of Jenetta's posse, there should be further development and integration of of their stories. Jenetta's two clones have her before-creation memories and are both in the military, therefore it makes sense for them to have similar military success. Why hasn't military command utilized the clones for strategic operations, since Jenetta can't be in two places at once? Also, she's always alone with very little personal life, which is intentional I'm sure, but it becomes odd after six books. And a little thing that bugs me is the made up names, because the mix of vowels and consonants don't make sense. Despite the weaknesses, I really do recommend this series. I'm on to book 7.
For this book specifically, why wasn't planet Siena, where Admiral Vroman and the Lisbon crew were stranded, offered up to the Galactic Alliance for colonization? Or have the GA at least establish it as an outpost. The stranded did an amazing job building a community and setting up a compound to defend against the indigenous creatures. It would have been a better endpoint for that part of the story.

Castle Vroman A Galaxy Unknown Book 6 eBook Thomas DePrima Reviews

If your a JENETTA CARVER fan, this book is another can't put down item.
After getting some help yesterday (Thursday, about 4 p.m.) I got it downloaded (Thank God). I started reading and the wait was worth it. At 4a.m. still reading in bed I got to a certain spot in the book and started laughing out loud ,haven't had a good laugh like that in a while, my wife finally made me put the book down, then It took quite awhile to get to sleep, because I kept thinking of the scene and kept laughing.
Being retired I was abe to finish the book today,(sadly), because I didn't want it to end. Don't think the book is short ,because word count and pages add up a good read.
Love to tell you more, but I'll end here saying "THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT"
P.S. Hope the next 6 or7 weeks pass quickly till the next book comes out.
It is just starting to get a bit tiresome. Mr. DePrima tells a pretty good story, but even his storytelling is notably limited by his mediocre skills as a writer. For instance, this book contained a relatively large sub-story arc about people trapped on a primitive planet where they struggle to survive, and all of it was eminently "skipable." Why? Because he is totally lacking in the ability to create complex characters that a reader can identify with and care about. If you don't give a single fig for a bunch of people trapped on a planet, then you really don’t care what happens to them, and their struggles to survive. Why waste the time? Ho hum. This lack of characterization is one of the two or three biggest problems with this series, and it limits the entire series because you don't have the emotional involvement that a reader should. Too bad.

Oh, and what is with the cats (her pet jaguars)? Okay, so they function as guard dogs. They saved her once, from an assassin, 2 or 3 books ago. That is it. Now they just sit around looking at people and taking up space. No function. No purpose. No attachment or involvement. I think the author believes they show something of the "character" of his main protagonist. Wrong. They serve no purpose. So why do we have to hear about them 20 times in each book? What a waste of time and story space. And this is just one example.

As it stands, all the characters with the exception of Jenetta Carver are just like the faces in a parade. You might watch the parade and think it is beautiful, but you don't have any personal attachment to the people who parade by. And as for the characterization of Jenetta, we know she is "The Ice Queen" who projects absolute calm, while being (somewhat) wracked with internal doubts. And she cares deeply for all the people under her command, especially those who go to their death, but she cannot show it for the most part. Okay. If you get the impression that even her characterization is relatively shallow, then you understand the level of his skill, or lack of it.

Otherwise, this is one of the better recent books in the series. Throw out the sub plot threads (or better yet, make us CARE about them), and the main story is rather nicely done. If you like this series then this book is certainly worth reading.
